Exhibition Statement
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, the lives of millions of people in eastern Europe changed forever. This photographic exhibition gives insight into their everyday lives and society in the decade following the fall of the USSR. 130 photographs from fifteen countries reveal the social, economic and political challenges of that time, as people attempted to cope with their drastically changing worlds and the disappearance of old narratives and routines. Created by German historians Jan C. Behrends and Ulrich Mählert, ‘The Post-Soviet Experience: Society and Everyday Life after Communism’ offers a fascinating and engaging look into the lives of people and societies in transition and upheaval.
