The Purgatory Project Exhibition 2025

University of Chester

1 Oct 2025

The University of Chester and Chester Cathedral is now hosting an art exhibition showcasing the concept of purgatory and how it resonates in today’s society.

The Purgatory Project Exhibition, which will highlight a modern vision of purgatory in contemporary society through a display of multimedia artworks by local artists, will be on show in The Cloisters at Chester Cathedral from October 1 to November 9.

Purgatory was interpreted dramatically by the Italian poet Dante in the 14th century, and explores the seven deadly sins of pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust, and the attempt to overcome them all to reach Earthly Paradise.

As well as the exhibition, a two-day symposium will take place in the Cathedral’s Chapter House on October 1-2, exploring themes of purgatory, inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. It will feature world-renowned experts in their field, a dinner on Wednesday and a panel discussion on ‘How is Dante’s Purgatorio relevant in the 21st century?’ The symposium is ideal for newcomers to Dante and enthusiasts alike.

The exhibition and symposium have been jointly arranged by Emeritus Professor Maggie Jackson and Canon Anthony Lees-Smith, with invaluable support from the University’s academic staff, technical staff and a Graphic Design student, within the School for the Creative Industries.

Associate Professor Bernadine Murray, Head of School for the Creative Industries, said: “This initiative exemplifies the strong partnership between the University and the Cathedral, celebrating creativity, scholarship, and community engagement.

“It provides a unique platform to showcase the talent and expertise within our School while fostering dialogue between the arts, heritage, and contemporary practice. We would be thrilled if you could join us for this occasion, which promises to be both inspiring and impactful.”
